What is a Doula

“Doula” a Greek word meaning “a women who serves”.  Another term used is Labor Assistant.  We are
non-medical support to the laboring mother to the end of her pregnancy, through labor and delivery, and
then during the early postpartum period.  We understand, respect and trust the birth process.

A labor assistant/doula

•        Stays at the laboring mothers side for the entire labor
•        Helps mom and partner stick to their birthplan
•        Understands and trusts the birth process
•        Provide support
•        Give her information to be able to help with decision making
•        Facilitates communication between parents and caregivers.

During labor the labor assistant/doula is there to ease the pain by explaining positions, comfort
measures and support.  They can help the mother establish breastfeeding.  We want to help the mother
find the confidence to let her body do what is natural for the body to do.

Doulas and labor assistants who complete training usually become certified, but some decide not to
become certified for specific reasons.  This by no means make them less or incapable of the job at hand.
